Resources

Currently a sparse list for now. I will build this out into a useful library as time permits.

Apps

  • Fig | www.foodisgood.com
    • Helps identify groceries that are safe. It’s especially useful for those with allergies to uncommon ingredients that can be hidden in foods (things grouped under terms like “spices” or “natural flavors” or flat out omitted). There’s a free version, a paid subscription, and (at the time of this writing) a free trial.

Books

  • The Poison Squad by Deborah Blum | www.goodreads.com/book/show/38813233-the-poison-squad
    • A biography about Harvey Wiley’s battle for food safety in the US during the early 20th century. It’s an insightful book about the challenges of enacting food regulation and shows just how long and difficult the fight has been over the century.

Communities

  • r/CornAllergy | www.reddit.com/r/CornAllergy/
    • A subreddit specifically for people with corn allergies. Corn is a food that is not on the regulated allergy list so is one of the hardest to manage of the 4 that I have. It is also commonly a hidden ingredient in a lot of other foods (even basic ingredients like raw pork (the packaging had a solution of corn starch which was not labeled), as I learned the hard way).
    • NOTE: the people posting here have various degrees of sensitivity to corn so please consider that when engaging with the community

Other Websites

  • The Corn Allergy Library | www.cornallergylibrary.com
    • A database of links relating to corn allergy, including medical journals, and user blogs (like mine)
